It clamps onto the back edge of the metal splitter and pawls: There's another slot for the front edge underneath the zero clearance insert next to the blade. It is pretty easily removable: I think it's like 2 set screws on the metal rod. Such a guard can be adjusted to cover the blade even during a non-through cut. They are widely available, and can be retrofitted to practically any saw.

The failure is there is no way to "suck" enough air through the system to have any real impact on the dust collected. Watching this work, the dust that just happens to be thrown upwards off the blade is what is captured.
