Closed-ended or valved CVCs usually have no external clamps. Open-ended or non-valved CVCs usually have external clamps (non-removable) present. Check the patient chart. WebThere's no real reason not to take blood from them as long as you discard the first 2ml and flush afterwards. Obviously if you're measuring a drug level through the same cannula you administer it you could get inaccurate results. In ITU they regularly take blood from cannulas. Tldr: you definitely can.
