You'll want to leverage the benefits of SMB 3.0+ if at all possible. But, SMB is a very chatty, and very latency-sensitive protocol. It will ALWAYS suck over WAN. Any kind of Active Directory administration tool like Active Directory Users and Computers, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory Administrative Center, Active Directory Sites and Services, Group Policy Management, etc... is VERY slow over the VPN. I can iPerf test from home to the office about 90-100mbps.
